Susvimo / Ranibizumab Port Delivery
Also known as Ranibizumab Port Delivery System, PDS, Ranibizumab Implant, Wet AMD Port, Sustained-Release Ranibizumab
Bottom Line
Susvimo is a small eye implant that slowly releases ranibizumab. It can reduce injection visits for some retina patients, but it adds surgery-specific risks.
Susvimo is ranibizumab delivered through a refillable ocular implant. The current label lists use for selected patients with wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, or diabetic retinopathy after response to prior injections 1.
The implant is placed during eye surgery. A retina specialist refills it through the implant at planned intervals.
In the Archway trial, Susvimo was studied for wet age-related macular degeneration. Ranibizumab delivery every 24 weeks was not inferior to monthly injections for vision outcomes 2.
How Susvimo Works
Susvimo holds ranibizumab in a small refillable implant. Ranibizumab blocks vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a signal that makes abnormal retinal vessels leak and grow.
The implant slowly releases medicine into the vitreous gel. The goal is to control leakage with fewer treatment visits than frequent injections.
Risks and Side Effects
Susvimo has injection-drug risks and surgery-specific risks. The label includes a boxed warning for endophthalmitis, a serious eye infection 1.
